Here is how I do it...

No matter if I do it through Steam or on the desktop... I click the the icon and a white box pops open. At the same time a traditional windows-error message pops up.

This error box says "PathViewer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

When I click "click here to see what data this error report contains" It gives me the following info:

AppName:pathviewer.exe
AppVer: 0.0.0.0
ModName: highpoly.dll
ModVer:0.0.0.0
Offset: 0000b16c

Then looking through the folders I have the following in my "path" folders:
CR80_Q3D.DLL
CP80_Q3D.DLL

Then I have the following in my windows folders:
SHLWAPI.DLL
KERNEL32.DLL
USER32.DLL
ADVAPI32.DLL
OLE32.DLL

My flatmate who's doing a computing degree had a look at the problem. Didn't manage to fix it, but apparently a couple of the main files were listed as being in the wrong place under their properties: intsead of "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\the path", they were listed as "C:\Program Files\The Path", which doesn't exist. Changing it didn't help, but we didn't have time to go through all the sub-folders and check every file.

It crashes at the same point as dalekurt for me, white box and error message. No error report, unfortunately, Vista searches for a solution and just comes up with 'a problem caused this program to close'.

I'll check to see if those files posted earlier are missing after classes.

That's interesting! Thanks!
Where did you find these file paths?

This error, however, also occurs with the non-Steam version of the game.

He opened the Properties of the file. On the 'Shortcut' tab, the 'Target:" and "Start in:" fields were wrong. This was on Vista, don't know if it's different in XP.

Ok, checked the files. I have "CR80_Q3D.DLL" and "CP80_Q3D.DLL", but I appear to be missing "SHLWAPI.DLL", "KERNEL32.DLL", "USER32.DLL", "ADVAPI32.DLL" and "OLE32.DLL"

This was posted in the other thread, sorry for the redundancy.

My computer does the same exact thing. Seems to switch video modes, then PathViewer.exe comes up with an error.

After I deleted the Preferences.cgr file as suggested in the other thread, the game comes up in a windowed mode with no sound. However, once I selected a girl (Ginger), the game simply quit with no message of any kind.

Trying to install the Visual C++ failed. (!) The installer just froze up on me. After waiting a few minutes, I'm still looking at an hourglass.

P.S. What time of system specs are you guys looking for? Just a DxDiag, or...?

Just to add to the above post - it looks like the C++ files installed correctly, although I didn't get any confirmation. The window just disappeared.

I checked Add/Remove Programs, and the C++ Redistributable is listed there, twice. Both are different sizes - 5.21MB and 4.48MB.

I restored Preferences.cfg and chose a different girl. Game still looks up after the loading screen.

Let me know what information you guys need.

Dxdiag is good. But CPU, RAM, video card and OS is all we really need.

Which loading screen? At the very beginning? The view of the apartment?
Or after choosing a girl?

By the way, the C++ DLLs are only meant to solve the crash on startup problem.

We're looking into this problem.

Please help us by describing what happens.

Does the game crash immediately on launch? Does the crash report point to highpoly.dll as the culprit?
If so, please check if the following files are on your system (they are needed by highpoly.dll):
CR80_Q3D.DLL
CP80_Q3D.DLL
SHLWAPI.DLL
KERNEL32.DLL
USER32.DLL
ADVAPI32.DLL
OLE32.DLL
The should be either in The Path's folder or in your Windows folder.

Does the game crash immediately on launch? - yes

Does the crash report point to highpoly.dll as the culprit? - I'm not sure. :/ I'll have to ask my Dad, haha (I'm bad with computers). Razz

Thanks for the help. Cool I'll get my Dad right on this. Razz
