I went to the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, last weekend. Somewhat disappointing though. It was too loud, really crowdy and a ratio of at least 25 visitors/screen. To be honest, there weren't really any revolutionizing new game concepts either. The most interesting upcoming title was in fact a Ukrainian ego-shooter/exploration game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Oblivion Lost". As the name suggests the developers have been inspired by Tarkovsky's classic sci-fi movie "Stalker". The game takes place inside the evacuated zone around the former nuclear power plant of Chernobyl, and yes, you run around with a big gun, and yes, your objective is to collect anomalies from the zone and guide teams of scientists around it, but! What an eerie atmosphere they've managed to convey. The sun is shining through the poplars along the road, deserted run-down houses left in a hurry, painting is coming off the walls, cigarettes are still lying on the floor, and that huge grey concrete metropolis looming in the distance. The visuals of this game is nothing less but stunning - the available screenshots don't really justify what it looks like in realtime.
