This is only tangentially related, but it's interesting to keep in mind when looking at these numbers that in most cases this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as audience is concerned, because the piracy rate for games (especially computer games, but also console games) is so high. So often times a game that would sell a million copies is more likely to be played by 10 or even 100 million people.

As much as I dislike the rudeness behind piracy (and will dislike it even more after I begin to make a living like this; I don't think it should be a crime, but I think it's very rude to someone do it to what someone else has created, so I don't pirate anything that's still up for sale) the positive flip-side of it is that if your games are good more people play them than you'll ever know, and it'll influence more of them than you can know.

Oh, and I can add one production cost, so as to not totally be off topic: I read once in an old issue of EGM magazine I believe that Final Fantasy 7 took 10 million to make.

Truthfully I'm simply extrapolating from studies done on the piracy rates of other media. I've heard a study that showed that only 3% of MP3s on the average iPod were paid for, 97% were pirated; similarly I've heard reference to a Japanese study on the piracy rate of anime as being 10:1 (10 pirated copies of a film for every purchased one). Games may not be as pirated as music and anime, but if so I'd find that surprising, because people who play games are on average more technically competent than people who listen to music or watch anime.

And this is just anecdotal, but my personal experience is that most of the people I know online do not buy PC games, they pirate them, and I don't think it's just my set of friends either, because that seems to be the attitude in general on forums, LiveJournal, etc. -- I literally don't know *anyone* besides myself who doesn't pirate most of the games they play (unless they are computer illiterate of course).

I'll have a look at those articles. I can imagine piracy is high on PCs but isn't the market on consoles a lot bigger? Console games are a lot harder to copy.

I think you misread what I wrote -- I said that console piracy was less than PC game piracy ("the piracy rate for games (especially computer games, but also console games) is so high"); sorry if I worded it badly though.

Nonetheless there is a lot of console piracy. It's not actually that hard to pirate console games. What you do is you get a modification to the system, which is apparently pretty simple to do (although it voids your warranty) which allows it to play pirated games recorded to CD-R's and DVD-R's. Many people I know have that modified system, and there are many places that offer the service to modify your system in that way for a ten dollars or so. After you've done that you can download a PS1 or a PS2 etc. game off the internet, record it to a CD or DVD, and play it on your system.

Also, there are emulators and ROMs, even PS1 and N64 emulators now, so people can download console titles from the previous generation and play them on the PC.

If I find myself even reluctant to do such a thing, I can only imagine how the masses feel. I just can't imagine that the true mainstream would get involved with such a geeky thing. When they have money and buying things is so much easier. I could be wrong and hopelessly naive, of course.

I don't think we can compare this to MP3s for instance or even movies: people are hardly aware that it is even illegal. But installing a mod chip that voids your warranty is not something you do by accident.

PC games and software is another issues. Those get copied very easily.

I personally buy all the games that I really play. But I admit that I have play-tested pirated games that I didn't buy. At least when I couldn't find a demo. The other exception is old games which are often easier to find illegally than to order in a store.
But I'm probably atypical: I don't play many games to begin with and I have ethical issues because I'm a developer, of course. So I think the numbers in the articles you refer to (40% of piracy) are probably correct. The question is of course, how many of those pirates would buy the game if they couldn't get it for free? Perhaps their playing it even spreads the word in such a way that it generates sales. Who knows?

In any case, you have a point that sales figures only represent a part of the actual number of players.
