Hush! Do you want everyone to know that we're not programmers!
I had a look around but I haven't seen the error. So it magically solved itself!
Please let us know if you see it happen again.
I think I have an idea what could cause this (and possibly other errors). I hope to have a look at it and hopefully fix it soon. |

I've never seen it before either. I think it was just a random glitch. That deer went away after about 10 minutes.
But, ooh, ooh, I got another, perhaps actually important bug (as long as its not just me somehow):
When I walk slowly by pressing forward and back arrow keys together, I can't turn to the left with the left arrow key. I can turn to the right with the right arrow key just fine. And if I walk normally by just pressing forward, I can turn to the left, so it's not that my key is broken. |

That's a strange error!
But this doesn't happen for me. For me it works fine. Odd... |

| I'm having what I assume is the same sound problem which Hoborg encountered. The sounds are all replaced by irritating beeps. I have never had a problem like this with any other game. Maybe I should try reinstalling my sound drivers. My sound card is a Sound Blaster Live! something or other, my computer's speed is 966 Mhz, and I use Windows XP. |

Let us know if updating your driver worked.
But I'm afraid the sound system in our engine is not very good. Hopefully we can afford to build a new one in the future. |

| I think its just that our computers are pretty slow. I'm amazed yours runs it at all on a <1ghz, heh. Mine's a 2400+ and barely barely runs it. It's probably my videocard that is the bottleneck here, though. I'm thinking about getting a radeon 96/9700 or something now that they are relatively inexpensive. If I do, i'll check and see if that fixes anything. |

I've heard a theory that says that when the game becomes to heavy for your computer, the sound engine can't keep up anymore, which causes distortions.
The Endless Forest benefits from both a fast CPU and a fast videocard. We recommend a Radeon 9800 or Geforce 4 in our system specifications. But if you only have a <1 Ghz CPU, you will still get pretty bad performance.
<BLABLA>
The reason for the bad performance of this application, compared to the super-engines of Half Life or Guild Wars, is that we use an authoring tool to build this game and we don't have a small army of programmers to optimize the code. If we would a. the game would not be available for free and b. more importantly, it would probably not be made by us (because we are creators not managers). And nobody else will make a game like this, I'm afraid.
We hope you think The Endless forest is worth the sacrifice. (If we could, we would give everyone a nice computer to run it. )

Hi all,
I downloaded the latest version (version 1.0 beta 5 8 November 2005) of the screensaver. I intalled it, and also installed the program to run it.
My diagdx (shortened, let me know if any other info will help)

As you can see, I'm well beyond the specs, and I have the correct version of directx 9.0C. I'm connecting via DSL, linksys router, so my connection speed is reasonably fast. But, it's not playing.
I bring up the game. After the name and authors display, I get a pretty screen, with a few (tiny) icons on the sides and top. If I click on the icons, or click escape key, the screen (sometimes) goes black, and then the same screen reappears. Nothing I click on seems to do anything., other than make the screen go black briefly, and then the same images reappears. It's not static, some branches in the forest are waving, but nothing I click on does anything. I can't even tab out, or do a control alt delete - I have to turn off my computer, and restart it. Well, sometimes I can get the task manager, if I hold control - alt - delete down, but when I release it, it goes back to the game screen.
Thinking that some program is interfering, I turned of my Norton Internet security personal firewall, though I did keep viris protection on. That's OK, as I have a hardware firewall - I connect to the internet via a linksys router. I shut down everything else I could think of, but to no avail.
Do you have any idea what is going on? Is there any other info you'd like to see?
I'd love to play this beautiful and interesting game.
All for now,
mszv |

Hi mszv,
Sorry to hear you're having problems. Obviously your systems far exceeds the specs. So something else must be wrong. The fact that you see the tiny icons in the border, means that the network connection works. So there's no problem there.
Have you tried reinstaling the Endless Forest?
Does the game start up to the point when the icon for standing up appears at the bottom of the screen (in the middle; with an O to the left for getting to the options screen and an X to the right to close the application)? What happens when you click on this icon?
What happens when you use the cursor keys?
Can you turn the application off with ALT-F4?
Are you running the game through the standalone launcher, or as a screensaver?
If you have a skinning applications like Windowblinds, make a exception for "ForestViewer.exe" or just turn it off. If you have a webcam application or any other application that updates its icon in the task bar tray, try turning it off. If you have a multiple monitor setup, try disabling all monitors but one.
Please let us know if any of these suggestions make a difference. |

I've updated my sound driver, and the problem persists. It starts only a half second or so after the words "Tale of Tales presents" appear on the screen. It's a constant series of beeps, of the sort made by an old-fashioned PC speaker. Each individual beep is very short, but every so often a second voice of beeping will pop up with longer beeps, alongside the beeping already playing. Is there supposed to be music?- if so, I don't hear it. All I hear are these beeps and the sound effects- I hear the sound of birds, for instance. The beeping is continuous, but its tempo is erratic. The farther I zoom out, the louder the beeps. It's worst in the options menu, where I hear a whole fugue of irritating beeps going simultaneously. The only way I can describe the overall noise there is that it is as if a robot were trying to communicate in beeps, but is underwater so it comes out as gurgling. Only much louder.
Needless to say, it is impossible to enjoy a tranquil atmosphere with this kind of disturbance, so I will not be playing your game. |
