http://www.puzzlepirates.com/
I have been obsessed with puzzle pirates lately. It is the most innovative puzzle game i've seen, so much its barely a puzzle game anymore. Its sort of an MMORPG except there is not really anything RPG about it other than you play as a pirate. Basically you play as a pirate, you can join crews of pirates and pillage other boats, you can challenge other pirates to different sorts of battles all conducted in puzzle form (swordfighting is almost exactly like the game "Puzzle Fighter"). Everything that is created (well almost) and all work that is done in this game has a puzzle.
And it gets a lot more indepth than just playing the puzzles and making money. There is this complex (well not THAT complex, but enough to be interesting) economy, you can trade goods from island to island, you can open your own shop and hire people to work (do puzzles) for you, etc.
I think my favorite part about it is how cooperative it is. In order to make a boat run you need a crew of different human players, you need someone to do the sailing puzzles, someone to navigate, etc. Whether you pillage other humans or computers, many humans need to work together to get anything done. I'm in a crew that owns a distillery, so we have to travel to different islands to find the ingredients for rum, carry over the goods (and defend against pillagers), and do the rum-making puzzle so that other crews can buy what they need from us (boats need rum to run like fuel). On a larger scale, some groups get so big that they can colonise whole uninhabited islands.. a ton of people need to work together for that to happen, but in the couple of years the game has been around, lots of islands have been colonised.
Its just a fun game, I only wish it werent so addictive. You can get a 10-day free trial if you download the client, its 10 dollars a month if you want to subscribe. I hate paying monthly fees for games, but i understand why it works that way, since the game is constantly updated with new things (a new puzzle was just added 2 days ago actually).
Annnyway, check it out...! |

How does the player-to-player communication work in the game? Is it just chat?
And do people stay in character? Or is it more a matter of getting the work (game) done? |

Player-to-player communication is pretty much just chat. They modify the chat a little so that cliche internet things like swears, "omg lol", , etc turn into pirate speak. Also one's clothing is a subtle form of communication - if you wear all black fancy clothes you are sort of flaunting your wealth wheras someone in rags is new/poor or just dosen't care.
People use pirate slang a lot, but not a lot of focus is kept on staying in character. Some do it more than others, I don't really bother. I haven't gotten into the politics side of things yet, though. There isn't really any "story" behind this world either (i dont think.. or at least a lot of importance isn't put on it), its just a bunch of pirates doin' what they do. |

That's a great idea!
I had already started calling people who use that type of slang in online games "lollers". It irritates me to no end that a great looking character in beautiful surroundings on a noble mission suddenly exclaims "lol". |

It's a great game. Though, it's sad we have to pay monthly fees to play puzzles games. I hate monthly fees I've tried the 10 days long trial and had quite some fun with some mini-games. |
