Thank you for this elaborate description!
This is very helpful. There is no music during the game but there is music in the Options screen. That's an MP3 file playing. And the sound that changes volume when you move the camera in and out is also an MP3. The other sounds, random bird sounds and such, are WAV files. So it seems like your computer has a problem with playing MP3 files in our game.
Could you test this theory by turning down the volume of Ambient sound and Music in the Options/Sound preferences? I'm not 100% sure if this excludes all MP3 files, though.

We know that the sound system in the Endless Forest isn't very good. There is hope, however, that we will be able to use another system in a future release. Hopefully that will solve the problems.

Yep, I just tried it on my machine - It is the "Ambient Sound" and the music in the options screen that causes the problems on slower machines like mine. If I turn "ambient sound" down to nothing, all the other sounds work pretty much fine - I can hear a bird chirping occasionally, and hooves on the ground, and the deer-call. So I guess it does have to do with the mp3s.

I realize I don't have the best name for The Endless Forest, bu thopefully that won't matter too much.

I created my account and named my deer yesterday and enjoyed my visit to the forest. Today I logged in to find that my pictogram had changed. I spent a good five minutes going through random pictograms till I found one that I could relate with. Is there any way I can get it back?

We are experimenting with the server. This experiment is still going on and will only be finalized with the release of a new version of the client. One of the side effects if this experimentation is that the login system has become less reliable. This is probably the reason why your pictogram was wrong.

It has not been lost! It is safely stored in our database. There's just something wrong with the login system at the moment, which may cause the pictogram display to be wrong sometimes.

So please try logging in again through Options/Network. You can even try it a few times. Or shutdown and restart the game. If you are still getting the wrong pictorgram, please let us know.

Thanks for the quick response, Michael. I'll try as you said with the re-logging in and let you know if anything changes.

Thank you for mentioning this. There does indeed still seem to be a problem with the login process. I think it's caused by players trying to log in with the old client. We'll try to fix it asap.
Meanwhile, I have restarted the server and things are back to normal.

I have made a change on the server but I'm not sure if this will remove the problem entirely. So please let us know if it happens again.

This here Endless Forest looks so great... but I can't do a thing with it so far. It's probably hopeless but maybe someone can at least tell me what's likely the problem, or if this kind of total no-go has happened to anyone else.

Ok, running the screensaver (preview) pretty much freezes things for a bit and then nothing happens. Then the standalone app does nothing. Except when I shutdown later it says they're still running and asks me to end them.

Here's my system:
Pentium 4 2.2GHz
ATI Radeon 7500
1GB RAM
2.49GB Free space
DirectX 9.0c
Windows XP

I know the Radeo 7500 is below what is reocmmended but it is 64MB, and I wouldn't think I'd get *nothing*. I would think it would load up at least and then have problems if it were the graphics gard. Whyyy o whyyy can't I be a deer and run around?

Does your video card have dual monitor output? It might be a problem with that. If it does, try setting it to one monitor only.

Try changing the FPS in the screensaver settings... move it lower.

Try running the app, Ctrl + Alt + Del, then end it in the process tab and try running it again.

The only other thing I can suggest is a re-install... maybe Micheal has some ideas.

Your graphics card is clearly the weak link in your otherwise very respectable system. I really recommend you upgrade. It's Christmas! Smile

We don't have a Radeon 7500 here so I can't test its performance. In comparison we have a Geforce 3 Ti running on a dual 400 Mhz Pentium at about 5 frames per second. Hardly fun, but it does run.

If I'm not mistaken, the Raden 7500 is a Direct3D 8.0 card. Perhaps it is missing some Direct3D 9.0 features that we're using?

Hope to see you in the forest some time. Keep us posted if you make any progress or have any other news about making the game run on your machine. Perhaps then we could help more.

Have you tired the streaming client? It installs slightly differently. I'd be much obliged if you tried it and let us know if you get the same results.

The game has been taking a strangely long time exiting. When I quit, it usually will give me a blank screen for a minute or so - I haven't waited to see if it will go back to my desktop on it's own, I just ctrl+alt+del, and it goes away.

I've seen this happening as well. It seems to have something to do with cleaning up the swap file it creates on your hard disk. I think there is an error in the engine that sometimes makes it create a much larger swapfile than is necessary. (Good thing this doesn't always happen... Confused )

Hmm... so there should be a way to code in a swap file cleanup when it exits, right?
That might make it exit a bit slower, but it would be cleaner, and exit the same way every time.
For now, I'm going to have to change some swap file settings.

As a side note, I installed the streatming client, but it was doing this both before and after I installed it.

We have no access to the parts of the code that deal with memory swapping. (and if we did we wouldn't know what to do with it anyway Wink )

But does this happen for you all the time now?
For me this hardly ever happens.

The streaming client is going to be a bit slower dealing with files because it needs to compare the online files with the cached ones.
